Labor pledges to resume detention centre control

The government says it will restart the detention centre and will continue to try and hold people without charge or trial.

The US-based Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) also said it had concerns about conditions for people detained at the centre.

The organisation called on the US government to do more to ensure that it did not use detention centres for rendition and other illegal actions.

There was also criticism that US President Barack Obama had failed to act earlier on Tuesday in condemning the human rights abuses at the centre, despite the president's repeated calls to do so.

Earlier in the week Mr Kerry said the UN human rights chief, Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein, should step down "now or later if he doesn't see what he ought to see".

The US has previously held at least one man in solitary confinement at the centre, with another suspect still being held by the US military.

'Viciousness' of allegations

CERD Executive Director Louis Charbonnier told Reuters that on Tuesday night some US officials at the meeting at which the statement came out had been "pushed to the breaking point" by claims from human rights groups.

He accused the US of engaging in "viciousness" and "deliberate obfuscation" that did not allow the facts to flow more freely.

But he said that the release of the statement was part of efforts to put pressure on Iran.

"It is incumbent on the administration and other states to put a stop to the viciousness of this case, and to end this process of torture, to end the systematic mistreatment of individuals in Iran, in all its forms and all of its aspects and in particular its detentions," Mr Charbonnier told Reuters.

Mr Obama condemned Wednesday's statement as "a very serious development", adding that he did not want Iran to be "the latest victim in this cycle" of human rights abuses.

He said the US must "put pressure on all states in this region and around the world and ensure that our diplomats do not take sides".

Transgender child fights to build house next to westboro church

The same person who took down Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group has also been the target of a gay rights petition

The same person who took down Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group has also been the target of a gay rights petition. A transgender community leader, Stephanie Tompkins, has been arrested and charged with felony threatening and assault.

Tompkins is being held without bond at the Benton County Detention Center.

Tompkins told the Benton County jail she is transgender and made the threats.

"I hate my birth name," she said. "I just came out as myself, and as far as who I am, I'm straight, as far as all that stuff."

Tompkins was arrested in February. She faces a judge's order of either a sentence of jail time or probation.

If she violates the conditions of her bond in the meantime, her release date could be in April.

Tompkins had previously posted videos from the video website YouTube and other platforms.

In one video, Tompkins spoke about the harm she sees transgender people's families suffer.

"It hurts, it really does, it really hurts and it never goes away. It doesn't get better. It never goes away," she said. "I can't even understand why we're being forced to fight these battles."

Tompkins told CNN the organization is not going to stop calling her by her real name because she has a history of violence against her family and people she thinks are not supportive of her.

'My God is greater than your god'

Tompkins is active in both local and international activism.

Tompkins said she was one of the people who formed the LGBT advocacy group American Trans Women.

She and her fellow gay activists have campaigned against the bullying of trans people in schools in Benton County.

She has been a frequent speaker at gay pride events in downtown Benton, and has been an active participant in the LGBT Pride Festival.

The LGBT community also said they have confidence in Tompkins, who was the keynote speaker at Saturday's Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center.

In March, Tompkins was arrested in Mississippi after a judge issued a warrant for her arrest over threatening to kill a 14-year-old boy because he wouldn't kiss her during an in-home visit. Tompkins was booked into jail and charged with one count of threatening with a deadly weapon.

Tompkins is scheduled to appear before a judge at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Benton County Detention Center. The case was dropped in January after her lawyers were told it was a fals
